WHAT ARE VOLTAGE OPTIMISERS & DO THEY WORK?

HOW THEY WORK
Installed in series with the mains supply, voltage optimisers for commercial sites intelligently reduce the voltage received from the grid, usually between 240 and 217 volts but with periodic spikes, to an optimised level to suit the required current load - usually around 220 volts.  In theory this will produce a saving of around 8% but everything is dependent upon the type of load and you should therefore speak to us before committing your hard earned capital.  They are also one of several possible solutions for power factor which is important for any commercial site on half hourly billing

WHAT THEY DO

Whereas UK power is supplied from the grid at 240volts (approx), most equipment is designed to run on a lower voltage with no loss in performance.  A voltage optimiser regulates the supply at around 220v with the surplus being rejected or returned to the grid.   This produces a power saving of around 8 per cent and a corresponding saving in kw used.  Some models are also capable of correcting KVAR (power factor) a penalty which will show up on the electricity bills of any sites on half hourly billing.   Several manufacturers claim higher savings but everything is dependent upon the type of electrical load at your site.

THEY WORK BEST FOR

Voltage dependant loads such as:
Motors (Uncontrolled)
Pumps
Certain Machinery
Incandescent Lighting
Halogen Lighting
Fluorescent Lighting (non electronic)
Metal Halide Lamps
Refrigerators

NOT SO GOOD FOR

Fluorescent Lighting with electronic ballast
LED Lamps
Motors with variable speed drives
Electric Heating
Electronic loads (IT Equipment, computers etc.)

Would a voltage optimiser be right for you?

Before committing yourself to the expense of installing a voltage optimiser, most reputable manufacturers recommend you undertake a proper energy survey.  This is where we come in.   As well as, power logging your supply in order to establish minimum and maximum demand and any KVAR* present,  we carry out a full walk round inspection of your equipment, a thermal imaging check and a thorough analysis of your electricity bill.   With optimisers ranging from just a few hundred to over ten thousand pounds just for the machine it is essential to know that the machine is going to work well at your particular site and that it will pay for itself!  Click the contact button to arrange your free initial survey.
